Tempeh Thursday: Sweet and Sour Tempeh

sweetsourtempehHubby and I have been on a sweet and sour kick lately. This is the second sweet and sour meal we’ve had in two weeks.

I love sweet and sour sauce; I must admit I’ve missed sweet and sour chicken since going vegetarian.  It must be why I crave making sweet and sour vegetarian recipes.  The other week, I made sweet and sour meatballs (which I’ll blog about in an upcoming post), and when I saw this dish while searching for interesting tempeh recipes, I couldn’t resist.  My tastebuds ruled over featuring a more unique tempeh dish, LOL

I found this sweet and sour tempeh recipe on About.com.  I used red bell pepper instead of green, and chopped it in large chunks so my hubby could pick it out (he dislikes bell peppers).  I served it over whole wheat Israeli couscous.  We both enjoyed this meal; I’d definitely make it again.  The only thing I might change is doubling the sauce next time.  Did I mention I love sweet and sour sauce? LOL  As you can see from the pic, the recipe “as is” produced a scant amount of sauce… well, it coated the veggies and tempeh alright, but I’m the kind of person who wouldn’t mind some extra sauce… especially for leftovers.  This tasted great the next day warmed up for lunch, but would’ve been even better if there was more sauce. ;)

  1. I have been craving sweet and sour, too! I personally haven’t found that tofu is a great flavor vehicle, but maybe I’m not using the right techniques. As a result, sweet and sour tofu has always been rather lackluster to me. I’m becoming so desperate that I might buy my own tempeh and sweet and sour sauce and use the pathetic stir fry stations in my dining hall!

  2. Hi Chris! This tempeh actually wasn’t that bad… braising it in a soy sauce/veggie broth mix before frying it up helped to give it an added flavor. But I’m a big tempeh fan… period. It’s hard for me to not like a tempeh dish because I crave it more than tofu! :)

  3. This dish looks so good and I love tempeh. I have an omni husband and son and I find the more I test out recipes like this the more they appreciate veg food. Your blog is really really nice.

  4. Thanks, Daneen! I agree… my hubby initially had a not-too-nice view of vegans… but now that I’ve been cooking a lot of vegan food, he has a new appreciation for it! :)
