Tofu Tuesday: Making tofu sloppy joes

tofusloppyjoesSloppy Joes.  An omnivore favorite.

When I moved in with my hubby after the wedding, I found at least four cans of “Manwich” in his cupboard.  It seemed to be a staple of his bachelorhood days.  Made me shudder!

But when I proposed for dinner either tofu sloppy joes or tofu burgers, hubby’s response was, “If you don’t make sloppy joes, I’m going to run out, get some hamburger and make some real sloppy joes.” LOL  Obviously I sparked his tastebuds with the sloppy joes mention!

So, using The Tofu Book: The New American Cuisine by John Paino and Lisa Messinger as a guide, I set out to try vegan tofu sloppy joes.

sj01I sauted diced onion in some olive oil…

sj02… crumbled in some extra-firm tofu…

sj03… added minced garlic (from a jar!) along with some basil and oregano…

sj04… mixed it all up and cooked over medium-high heat until most of the moisture had evaporated…

sj05… stirred in a cup of pasta sauce…

sj06… along with some mustard and brown sugar…

tofusloppyjoes… once heated through, we scooped the mixture onto buns, sprinkled some cheese on top and voila!  Tofu sloppy joes!

These weren’t half bad.  Initially I was afraid hubby wouldn’t give his thumbs up, because the pasta sauce just didn’t live up to the ketchup taste used in traditional sloppy joes recipes.  And while hubby agreed on the ketchup, he also really liked these.  So much so, he went back for seconds and requested that I try the recipe again tonight, using ketchup in place of the pasta sauce! LOL  He said I could make it all week if I wanted to.  Lawrd, I’ve awakened the “Manwich” in him again… help me, please? ;-p

  1. Your hubby sounds a lot like my hubby. I would find cans of Manwich sauce in his pantry all the time. I’m going to have to try this recipe. I’m sure that my son would eat these right up. Yummy!

  2. I really like this idea! I’m so not a fan of using store-bought frozen vegetarian sloppy joes, but this uses fresh ingredients and, according to your hubby, seems to maintain the sloppy joe flavor. Thanks for this!

  3. Mmmm that’s a new way to do it. I was never a big fan of them, but I did make them once when I had a pkg of Yves Veggie Ground to use up and found a can of manwich in the cupboard. This recipe sounds better though, and a bit more wallet friendly.
