A huge loss :(

harryandi_webI know I’ve been quiet on the blog front lately.

I made a difficult decision to euthanize my cat, Harry, on April 24.  :-(

Over the past nine months or so, Harry and I had been dealing with a slew of medical issues as well as stress related to the joining of our household with my hubby’s.  Harry was FIV positive and fought off things like bouts of toxoplasmosis.  But the stress of moving into my hubby’s house really tested Harry and contributed to inappropriate elimination issues.

The stress began to take it’s toll on me too, which is why I essentially stopped blogging.  I tried to focus on making Harry better, and finding harmony and peace in our household among the three of us.

But Harry got really weak all of a sudden.  His back legs became extremely unstable.  Then one night, when he was sleeping in my lap, he had a seizure.  And before the hour was up, he seizured again.  I rushed him to an emergency vet, where he seizured again.  They kept him overnight in an attempt to control the seizures with medication.  They said it was most likely neurological, and talked about the option of an MRI which would cost $2,000 easily.  Even that couldn’t guarantee they would be able to fix him.  I gave him time with the emergency vets, to see if the meds would work in controling the seizures, but they did not.  Harry weakened to the point where he wasn’t emptying his own bladder.  That’s when I knew it was time.

It still didn’t make it easier.  The loss was, and still is, great.  He was my first male cat… my guy… my boo-boo.  He was the first cat I attempted to clicker-train, teaching him how to “high-five” for treats.    Although he was an indoor cat, he was my hunter and protector… hunting any centipede who dared to skurry across my carpet.  Once, he even caught a little brown mouse who had the misfortune to find its way into my house.  Harry was unusual in that he didn’t care for catnip at all, nor most cat toys.  But he did love his ribbons.  And the remote-controled mice that my then-fiance bought for him.  He also used to love to sleep on our heads, the only spot for him on my modest bed when my then-fiance would stay over.

I could go on and on about Harry (who was named after my favorite boy wizard at Hogwarts) and all that I’ll miss about him.  But the truth is, there isn’t room on this blog to say all the wonderful things I loved about Harry.  I will miss him so much.

I do plan to resume blogging, but it has to feel right.  I’ve still been a little unmotivated as of late.  I wanted to let everyone know that I didn’t fall off the face of the earth, but I did lose a friend.  :-(

RIPharry

  1. Awh, I’m sooo sorry for your loss. It sounds like he was such a sweetheart.

  2. So sorry to here about your loss. Harry sounds like he was a very special cat. I loved his high 5 video.

I love your blog and I can certainly understand why you need to take a break but I look forward to more posts when your ready.

  3. As a mom of an aging pup and a sprightly kitten, I sympathize with you and your loss. We are fortunate to have amazing animals to share our life with, but when they leave us, they inevitabley leave a hole in our heart. Know your guy lived a grand life and loved you as much as you loved him. Perhaps cooking is just the distraction you need… perhaps I just miss reading your blogs ;) Take care.

  4. I’m a little behind on my reading, but wanted to tell you I’m very sorry about Harry. He was a beautiful boy.

  5. I am sad for your loss… I should have read this sooner. Your beautiful story made me cry, as did the video.
