I did it.
I took the leap today and joined a local CSA group! What’s a CSA, you say? Well, it’s a system in which local farmers offer shares of their harvest for purchase to the public.
I joined the Maple Creek Farm CSA, which is a family-owned certified-organic farm in Michigan’s thumb region. For my financial support of $700, I’ll receive a box of fresh organic produce from the farm, once per week, for 20 weeks. Beginning in mid-June and lasting through October, each week I’ll receive a box of veggies from a local pick-up point. Check out all the yummy veggies that will be coming my way!
I first learned about CSAs last year and wanted to participate, but my research discovered that sometimes the shares can produce a lot of veggies. Still a bachelorette at the time, I wasn’t confident I could eat everything and not waste it. Now that I’ve got my wonderful hubby, I was estatic when I didn’t have to do much pleading or convincing to get him on board to try the CSA this year. I easily spend close to $30/week right now on veggies, and not all of them are organic. So, $35/week for fresh, locally-grown organic produce? That’s a deal in my eyes! Hubby thought so too.
I’m going to keep this post short because I’m sure by the end of the summer, y’all will be so tired of me talking about my CSA adventures… yes, I do plan to document on my blog what I do with all this produce!! I’m really excited about it–this will be a great personal challenge for me to come up with different recipes and dishes according to what type of veggies are in our box each week.
Till I get my first box of veggie goodness, feel freel to visit the Local Harvest Web site to learn more about community supported agriculture or search for group in your area.

Yow! And I was complaining about $480 for a 26 week organic share. Silly me.
Mare – $480 is DEFINITELY an AWESOME deal!!
I paid 450.00, but it’s for a half share. So I don’t think your price is bad at all. We’re not vegetarians, so the half share works for us. I’m blogging about our experience at http://www.onethousandradishes.com.
