The great pepperoni nightmare

I must be more stressed over the impending pig roast than I realize.

Over the weekend, I had a very strange dream that my hubby tricked me into eating REAL pepperoni.  Can’t even really go into details because the dream (or what I remember of it) was that short… but I do recall him feeding me beef pepperoni and once I realized I had eaten meat, I was completely disgusted and extremely angry with him.

In retrospect, it wasn’t an unusual dream to have given that hubby and I have been at odds over the pig roast event, which is this coming weekend.  This discussion has been a very difficult one for us.  I feel he’s asking me to compromise a belief that’s part of my core.  Vegetarianism is something I’m extremely passionate about, and he knows that.  He doesn’t see the difference between the pig roast and cooking hamburgers like they do at every campout.  I’ve tried to explain the difference, but hubby and I feel very differently about animals.  I know this will not be the first difficult situation we find ourselves in.

I have decided to go to the campout/pig roast.  Why?  Because I love my husband.  That’s the only reason I’m going… for him.

I informed him that I do plan to blog about the experience.  I’ll have my camera in hand this weekend anyway, so I hope to come home and share a candid look at how our mixed vegetarian/omnivore household deals with the event.  Watch for that sometime next week.

On a lighter note… I pick up my first CSA share tonight!!  I’m so excited!  I hear we’ll be receiving strawberries, lettuce varieties and garlic scapes.  The shares reportedly become more bountiful as the weeks wear on.  Look for my assessment of tonight’s share in the next day or two!! :-D

  1. Hi, I’ve been reading your blog for a while…found it looking for a recipe for sweet and sour tempeh…which was great, BTW!! In a way, the pig roast won’t really be any different than the burgers….it is just not disguised. I hope you will be okay,I know it would be terribly hard for me!! My husband was an omnivore when we first met. He stopped eating meat two weeks after we got together and he LOVES being a vegetarian!! Enjoy the CSA share, that should be lots of great veggie’s all summer long.
    Peace and Love,
    Stephanie

  2. Hi! Great blog, I can totally relate to a lot of what you have written, being a vegetarian married to an omnivore. I saw you on FoodBuzz while I was checking out the Seva restaurant listing.

Sorry about the pig roast, that sounds awful but I understand going for your husband. We were invited to a pig roast last summer (in-laws) and thank goodness my husband had to work so that excused me from going :) Good luck!

Your CSA sounds great, can’t wait to hear what you got!

  3. Well, I’m glad you finally reached a decision! That’s the hardest part! I will say that, if the pig is in full view, that is much different from cooking hamburgers. It can be disturbing, even for meat eaters. I know quite a few meat eaters who don’t like to be reminded that they’re eating something that was once running around. :-)
