Jarred pasta sauce: Bam it up!

pastadinnerNow that the new season of Heroes has started, Monday evenings have become “Pasta Nights” in my household.  Pasta makes for a quick and easy meal that I can make and clean up in the short time frame between when I get home from work and when Heroes begins at 8 p.m.

Hubby isn’t a huge fan of pasta though.  While I could eat different variations of pasta several times a week, once per week is about all he can stand.  In an effort to entice him, I’ve been enriching jarred store-bought pasta sauce by adding in lots of sauteed veggies!

My current fave is Barilla brand pasta sauce.  Last night, it was the roasted garlic flavor.  I sauteed a bunch of chopped up veggies from our CSA share… onion, red pepper, eggplant, green beans and brussel sprouts!  I’ve pretty much worn out my food chopper and am long overdue to replace it!  But the diced veggies really thicken the sauce and make for a heartier meal. :)

I’m going to attempt to start blogging again.  I’ve been feeling extremely guilty about not posting.  Part of it is all the stuff still going on in my personal life.  Another part of it is that I struggle with relevance.  With so many wonderful vegetarian/vegan blogs on the Net, I guess sometimes I wonder where mine fits in, and if it’s even worth blogging if I can’t say something new that hasn’t already been said a gazillion times.

One thing that might help, in my mind, is to blog less about food and more about the nuances of being in a vegetarian/omnivore relationship.  Food certainly plays a large part in that, but should I be blogging about what I cook all the time if hubby is extremely favorable to veg food and eats most anything I set down in front of him?  I wonder if my readers might find it more interesting to read about the dinner conversation hubby and I had at my friend’s wedding over the weekend, which started with questions about my vegetarian lifestyle from our table’s guests and was followed by an in-depth discussion about all the weird animal parts one table guest likes to eat.

What do you, my readers, think?  When you visit my blog, what do you hope to read?

  1. I’m always pleased to see you pop up on my googlreader VegWife. I am a former vegan, current pescitarian, who cooks at least 75% vegan at home. I am married to carnivore, through and through… though one who loves my vegan mac and cheese (VWaVengance) and Gimme Lean vegan sausge. He will eat anything I make, but he still eats meat (only quality organic meat is in our home though). The point is.. your relationship with your husband, your views on veganism, that’s what makes your blog special. I’d love to hear all about all the things you listed, and still hear about meals that satify you both. Your blog stands out wiith just under 100 vegan/healthy eating blogs on my reader. Keep writing, but only when you have something relevant/important to say and you want to share it. There’s no pressure. Take care.

  2. I can totally relate to what you say about relevance. I wonder the same thing and blog very little because I want my posts to say something new or be unique to me. I love reading blogs and am interested in whatever you want to blog about. I wonder how your husband rationalizes not being vegetarian!! Do you ever cook meat for him…do you allow meat in your kitchen…I absolutely could not stand for anyone to cook meat in one of my pots…. So I would be interested in how you two work out these things.
    Peace, Stephanie

  3. I, too, am a vegan married to an omnivore, although my situation is entirely different. My husband eats meat every night, and I still cook it for him. I guess the big difference for me is that, while I am thrilled that my vegan food choices save the lives of animals, the main motivation for me is health. Ergo, if he wants to jeopardize his (he has high BP and cholesterol), who am I to stand in his way? I love your blog, whatever you write! Keep it up!

  4. My partner is a omnivore, but we keep a veg home. It was just one of those points I held strong on when we moved in together. When we go out she eats whatever she wants, but in the home we don’t purchase, store or cook meat.
I love reading about both topics, what you cook and the discussions…

  5. I just discovered your blog through Stumble Upon and I’m enjoying what I’ve read so far. I’m new to this vegetarian thing and, luckily, my husband is taking the journey with me. (Although he has to fuss about it, but he’s really on board.) My 7 year old son, however, is sure he’s going to die without meat. ;) He’s already begging for hamburgers, hot dogs, and lunch meat and it’s only been a couple of weeks since we made our decision to go vegetarian. We haven’t even finished off the meat I bought before we made this decision, for Pete’s sake. Anyway, your blog is interesting and I plan to keep checking back. I have a blog too and I’ve decided that I am writing for ME. Don’t worry about relevance, just write from the heart and make it something YOU enjoy. :)

  6. Thank you, everyone, for your kind comments and encouragement! I truly appreciate the support and the time you take to visit/read my blog! I’m working on some ideas and hope to post more frequently again. :-D
